My impression is that conservatives treat life like a zero sum game, in which the only way to win is by the misfortune of others; liberals are more apt to believe everybody can be a winner.

Just the opposite. Liberals believe that anyone who is successful is so because they're taking advantage of others. This is why they feel morally justified in confiscating the successful person's wealth to give back to the people that he, in their minds, took it from.

If you don't believe that yourself then perhaps you should take a closer look at your beliefs and see if you really are a liberal.

Conservatives see the governments role as providing a tablet where those who wish to work hard can and will succeed. Liberals think the more government control the better...and the bigger the government the better. At some point the government out competes the private sector with the taxpayers money.

If liberals believe this, their actions are inconsistent.

Liberals would rather have everyone equally poor than allow a few to prosper, even if the few make everyone better off.

Cheers, PW.
