'The Powerize 50' for Week of March 27: Fiber Optics White Hot

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 29 2000 8:04 AM EST

RESTON, Va., Mar 29, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Fiber optics, the key to the Internet's future, steals the spotlight in the latest Powerize 50. Sparked by insatiable interest in technologies for high-speed networks, half of this week's top ten searched companies are fiber optics or optical networking players. The weekly list of companies being watched by individual investors and business researchers at www.powerize.com is derived by tracking the search requests of more than 400,000 Powerize.com members.

Technology companies have regularly dominated the Powerize 50, with different niches taking turns in the spotlight. This week it's fiber optics and networking players: JDS Uniphase (3), Ciena (6), Corning (7), Lucent Technologies (8), ADC (9) and Optical Networks (10), Sycamore Networks (12), Qwest (14) and Digital Lightwave (15) all crack the top 20.

Meanwhile, E-commerce solutions specialist Ariba holds the top spot for the third straight week. Microsoft, a lock in the top position until two weeks ago, slipped two more spots to fifth. Also of note, Belgian speech technology solutions company Lernout & Hauspie (13) announced Tuesday it will acquire privately-held Dragon Systems (4).
