telecom guy --

if cisco didn't have competitors gunning for it, sleek aggressive upstarts challenging in niche markets, or some internal weaknesses, then Janet Reno would be holding press conferences, and Chmabers would be spending a lot of time in Washington.

Cisco has consistently out-executed strong (or once strong) competitors in the past, and their prowess is growing, not shrinking. Upstarts can be acquired with a blink of the eye. A real scary thought would be to consider NT's internal weaknesses. I say it once again ... you are taking a very shallow, myopic view of the competitive landscape. It is not an either-or proposition here. CSCO is already incredibly successful, and they're just now starting to crack the telcom market and broaden their SP market opportunities. You assume that deficiencies and product holes cannot be addressed. Well, CSCO has proven time and time again that it can address weaknesses, and do so quickly.

NT -- their Enterprise business they bought with Bay has shrunk ... shrunk in an expanding market. CSCO has grown even more dominant. NT still has a tremendous amount of revenue tied to traditional telephone switches, etc. If you truly believe the network convergence story, NT has a lot of revenue to replace over the next 5 years...

That's not to say NT won't flourish. It will do great. But it has LU and CSCO, two very, very tough competitors, to deal with. Buy all three, sit on them for five years, and be very, very happy with your gains in all three.

>>I have to admit that I am amazed at the resilience of CSCO stock considering all the things that are conspiring against this company! (other 800 lb gorllas that are gunning for it's enterprise market, sleek-aggressive upstarts, CSCO's internal weaknesses, overblown stock price, etc.)

Insert "NT" and you were right. No gorillas after Cisco's market, "the" gorilla that stands to gain NT's.

>>Oh well, the market can never be wrong eh Zolt?

Not today. Looks like NT is dragging Cabletron down.

Always knew NT was a market leader of sorts.
