Chrysalis is the first company to announce a product that is "AES ready." (http://www.nist.gov/aes) The network processor announced supports ALL FIVE of the AES candidates. They're covering all the bases.

Also, it appears (my opinion only) that Rijndael is the leading contender right now for the AES title, and MARS and RC6 are out of the running. That leaves Twofish and Serpent to duke it out with Rijndael, and I think Serpent is too slow.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Chrysalis-ITS Targets Network Equipment with Breakthrough Network Security Processor Technology

Programmable System-on-chip technology aimed at VPN, Routers, Switches and WAP servers

Burlingame, California, April 25, 2000 - Chrysalis-ITS, developer of system and semiconductor products that enable trust in networks and e-business, today announced a new class of network security processors at the Next Generation Networks Conference. As the core networking hardware market evolves from fast rigid ASICs, to new fast and flexible Network Processors, network security processing becomes extremely important. Chrysalis-ITS' new Luna 340 multi-processor system-on-chip technology with optimized firmware, real-time operating system and developer API provides systems architects with a powerful yet flexible network security processing solution for next generation networking equipment. Other planned devices in the Luna NSP series target a range of applications.

The device is the first cryptographic accelerator with a combination of flexibility to keep up with protocol changes and performance to meet the demand of high growth VPNs and e-commerce servers. Chrysalis-ITS technology also offers the necessary performance and flexibility to provide solutions for a range of systems including routers, WAP servers, WAP gateways, PKI Certificate Authorities, Web switches and VPN equipment.

Because existing security processor solutions are inflexible and have inadequate I/O, they do not work well with the new breed of network processors. Chrysalis-ITS is responding to the need for specialized security processing to complement rapidly evolving packet processing capabilities. For encryption and authentication to become ubiquitous, it is absolutely mandatory that network security processing capabilities evolve in parallel with packet processing and switch fabric capabilities.

Features and Benefits

The Luna 340 supports a comprehensive set of encryption algorithms and protocols. In addition, the Luna 340 already supports all of the contenders for the new AES (Advanced Encryption Standard). Systems that make use of the Luna 340 will be "AES ready". Security features including RNG capability, zeroize circuitry, battery backed NVRAM and real-time clock allow system designers to meet FIPS 140-1 level 3 security validation.

An evaluation board and software development kit are offered for the Luna NSP development platform. The development platform allows designers to interface with the Luna 340 at the application layer and take advantage of a wide range of layer 2 and 3 security protocols, asymmetric/symmetric cryptographic algorithms and packet processing functions.

As a scalable architecture, designers can be assured that new devices in the Luna NSP series will build on the software investment further improving time to market. Offered in a 304-pin thermally enhanced BGA package, the Luna 340 will provide the highest performance single-chip solution for carrier and enterprise applications.

Applications

Both carrier and enterprise edge networking equipment will benefit from the Luna 340 and associated software. For example, new edge switch/routers must be designed to meet service provider requirements for density, speed (for worst case traffic types), reliability, and VPN performance. Chrysalis-ITS will provide a device that targets bi-directional OC-3 VPN applications allowing manufacturers of carrier edge equipment to offer new levels of service and flexibility. In remote access equipment where tens of thousands of secure tunnels must be set up and torn down quickly, key exchange security associations must be performed at ever increasing rates. An on-chip high performance public key processor provides the performance required. High growth web switches and WAP servers for wireless e-commerce can also take advantage of the Luna 340's capability to perform protocols such as SSL and WTLS at high speed.

Availability

Chrysalis-ITS is currently engaging with qualified lead customers who are interested in evaluating the NSP development platform.
