Ausdauer, I agree with most of the suggestions made here by yourself and others. But however nice it might be if SNDK had a wonderful web site, an on-line store, and a marketing "machine", we must consider the following:

1) SNDK sells mainly through distributors. An on-line store could be viewed as competitive.

2) Very few people are likely to ever visit SNDK's web site. They will probably buy their flash memory from the same source who supplies their e-cam.

3) SNDK sells over half its products through non-US distribution. A spiffy web site and neato labelling would have to be created in 27 languages.

From the looks of things, Lexar has found it a futile exercise to compete with SNDK at the commodity level and is attempting to create a "premium" brand image for itself. This is a fine strategy for a company with ~10% market share. With luck, they'll manage to hold onto that share over time.

If flash goes the way of film, we could end up with SNDK as the equivalent of Kodak's ubiquitous "Kodachrome" and "Ektachrome" products and Lexar with the equivalent of the "Kodak Professional" line. The last time I wanted the latter, I had to special order it and wait for delivery.

As a SNDK shareholder, I'm far more worried about Sony than Lexar. Because, if Sony "does a Fuji" on us, the marketing war could escalate to margin-killing promotional discounting and Superbowl TV ads.
