not sure what Dell is really trying to accomplish here

We haven't seen Jean Gauthier around here for a long while, sadly, but I bet she'd be able to share the vision with us. This news of Dell is not at all a surprise to the people who paid attention to the stuff she told us about a long time ago, the kind of stuff the company was doing to get as close to having the powers of a Gorilla as possible without having the attributes.

Dell, I'm certain, is using the same forward-looking thinking that is sympotmatic of their first efforts to approach their industry in a completely new way. Imagine Dell investing in all sorts of start-ups, guaranteeing access to those technologies in a partnership way that their competitors won't enjoy. Don't be surprised if Dell manages to take on a Godzilla characteristic or two by the time they're done making a few dozen investments.
