By the end of this year SBC alone will have DSL service available to 80% of their customers. Covad, Rythms, and Northpoint will each have over 50% of the United States DSL capable by the end of the year. VDSL (Speeds up to 50 Mbs)is going to hit this year also. Other Bells are expecting large rollouts of DSL also. Maybe I am missing something about the amount of bandwidth you feel like the last mile needs in order to provide the services we are talking about. I feel like we are a year away from overcoming the last mile barrier for at least 80% of businesses and general public. Just my thoughts.

Re: A Brave New World- Sans Last Mile??

"Here's why. Supposedly there are 4.6 million commercial buildings in the United States. Only 1% of them have fiber. There are 100 million households in the United States. Let's see...hmmm....about 0% have fiber run to them.<g>"

Frank- I linked this via the "who wrote" to a comment I made a year ago.

IMO I think the Lucent "Geoworks" PR fluff of one year ago was only second to Sprint's ION PR fluff. Above is a little of my commentary on it when I listened in on the CC for the push for Geoworks.

I fully expected to go to the Lucent website today and see they killed the project. It's not dead, but appears to be close. Or I should say, they redirected it's purpose from it's original PR. -MikeM(From Florida)
