Wayne, Smart has little to do with making money in the short run. After all, it doesn't take brains to play "17" on the roulette wheel when it comes up several times in a row. It only takes brains to take some of your profits off the table as you play it. Robertson did make a fatal error in betting too much on a few issues. That is a rookie mistake. But his 28% return annualized over 20 years shows that it was not just a string of good luck that got him to where he made his big error. And, as always, the big errors happen after the fund maxes out in size. <g> The real dummies always come in late.
