Patrick,
HI!!

RE: The news is not good for Compaq, which had been able to point to its consumer PC division as a bright spot compared with its money-losing commercial PC operation. Last year, Compaq also ceded the top spot in overall U.S. PC sales to Dell.

Was told last June that things at CPQ were far worse off than anyone imagined...Guess Cappellas hasn't stopped the bleeding...

Best, Kemble

Pat The ability of a major P/C mfgr to capture >42% of a market is very encouraging.
If P/C sales grow 20% a year, and Dells market share rises from 9% to 20% in two years Dell would be selling 220 % more computers- over an 80% increase per year.
Considering that:
1. PC sales in China are expected to increase 100% this year, not 20%
2. That Dell P/C sales grow at multiples of the industry rate.
3. That Dells other areas of effort have a much greater growth rate than P/C's
How is Dell going to keep from exceeding the predicted growth rate rate of ~35% ?
Sig

--10:50 am Prudential's Alexy comments on Dell, Apple and Gateway

Dell Computer (DELL: news, msgs) is tacking on 1 3/4 to 53 15/16. Analyst Kimberly Alexy at Prudential raised her target on the stock to $68 from $60 ahead of the company's analyst meeting scheduled for early next week. She expects the company to highlight the recent upturn in corporate PC demand. Alexy also raised her EPS estimates on Apple Computer (AAPL: news, msgs) by 2 cents, noting a mid-May conference could provide an additional catalyst. The stock is up 2 11/16 to 128 7/16. She wasn't so high on Gateway (GTW: news, msgs). Although, she thinks concensus EPS estimates will be met or slightly beaten, revenues may fall short of expectations. She sees the company lowering second-quarter revenue estimates when it reports Q1 numbers, but any drop in the shares as a result would represent a buying opportunity. Gateway is inching 1/16 higher to 53 3/8.
