Seoul to advance selection of IMT-2000 service providers Denying rumors of delay in the IMT-2000 schedule, Information and Communication Minister, Ahn Byong-yup, said yesterday his ministry will advance the service providers selection process ahead of schedule and form a new venture belt linking Songpa-gu, southeastern Seoul, with Songnam, Kyonggi Province. "The ministry will decide the number of IMT-2000 providers, standardization policies and the selection process and accept applications from companies in September so that finalists can be selected by the end of the year," he said in an interview with Yonhap. "The government will try to pave the way to make a venture company belt between Songpa-gu in Seoul and Songnam in Kyonggi Province in order to alleviate high rent in Teheran Valley in southern Seoul," he said. On the nation's prospects for advancing into the Chinese CDMA market, he said China must adopt the standard due to surging mobile phone demand and the high evaluation of Korean technology and experience. On the recent concern over the bubble venture boom, Ahn said it is true that some venture companies have no technologies and short-term adverse effects on excessive speculation could arise, but those problems should be solved by the market rather than by government intervention. The government will strengthen super high-speed Internet infrastructure this year to boost speed six times faster than last year, while implementing quality assessment on super high-speed Internet service from June. He urged Korean companies to make efforts to advance into China, whose Internet users are surging, saying the English and Chinese languages will dominate the Internet in the future. Ahn also said he will meet the Israeli ambassador to strengthen cooperation with leading Israeli information technology companies. (Yonhap) Updated: 03/31/2000
