By the time the genomics story made it to the front page of the nation's business publications, the rally in the group was on its last leg. Since peaking at $222.75 on March 7, the AMEX-traded basket of biotech stocks known as the Biotech HOLDRS Trust (BBH 157 3/4 -8 1/4) has corrected 30%. The BBH's losses, however, have been mild when compared to the devastating declines suffered by individual genomics names. Group bellwethers such as Human Genome Sciences (HGSI) and Millennium Pharmaceutical (MLNM) have peeled back as much as 70% from their highs, all the time being reiterated as top picks by Wall Street analysts. A number of analysts were left with no choice but to pound the table on the foundering stocks, given that many of their initial recommendations were made 300%, 500%, as much as 1900% into the move and very near the apex of the rally. Loss of momentum caused by joint statement issued by President Clinton and British Prime Minister Blair calling for free access human gene mapping research has triggered a decline that has sent stocks reeling through support levels and resulted in many of the stocks relinquishing the majority of their year-to-date gain. Severity of decline, however, has set the group up for a near-term technical bounce, which we believe will occur within the next two weeks, as investors begin to rummage through the carnage in search of a semblance of value.
