There are other ways of buying stocks on borrowed money. One is by taking a home equity loan , i.e. literally betting one's house on the market (and there are lenders these days that are willing to loan to the extent of 125% of the equity). Another is by taking cash advances on credit cards.

And of course, in both the above instances, you can take the money and then open a margin account with that!

This may be anecdotal but I know of a person who has done it (borrow money from a credit card and use it to open a margin account). And he talks like the typical present-day "stocks always go up" and "a bear market usually lasts one week" investor.
