Corporate accounting has become increasingly creative as well. IBM booked material nonoperating gains against selling, general and administrative costs (SG&A). The company claims this is consistent with past practice. But in prior years these nonoperating gains on average amounted to approximately 1/20th the size of the gains posted in 1999. ***Tyco takes settlement gains resulting from employee terminations to SG&A, unless the amount is immaterial, then they report it separately with other nonrecurring charges.*** Coca-Cola Enterprises recently discovered they could beef up margins by lengthening their depreciation schedule.
