Tuesday March 21, 8:59 pm, LWIN reported a second-quarter loss on Tuesday that was wider than expected, but reported surging growth in the number of subscribers to its wireless communications service.

Customer growth in Leap's subsidiaries and joint ventures in the United States, Mexico and Chile almost tripled to about 311,000 subscribers from 104,200 in the previous quarter, the San Diego-based spinoff of Qualcomm Inc. said in a statement.

Leap (NasdaqNM:LWIN - news) also said that with the acquisition of ChaseTel, which covers 6.6 million potential customers mostly in Tennessee, its Cricket wireless product was introduced in late January. The Cricket service lets users make and receive virtually unlimited phone calls in their local service area.

Leap added 13,000 subscribers to its Nashville service during its first month of operation and achieved a 1.4 percent penetration on a covered population basis.

Growth was also strong in its Pegaso Mexican joint venture, Leap said. It added 155,000 customers during the quarter to bring the total number of subscribers on its network to 182,000 at the end of February. In December, it started offering service in Mexico City.

``It's really been an amazing quarter,' said Harvey White, Leap chairman and chief executive in an interview. ``It makes you a little bit hesitant whether you can repeat the same next quarter but we're dedicated to continuing to execute.'

The company had a loss of $84.7 million, or $4.00 a share, compared with a loss of $22.6 million, or $1.30, a year ago. Sales were $8.79 billion compared with nil a year ago.

Excluding charges for retiring $4.4 million of debt, Leap reported a loss of $78.6 million, or $3.79 a share. On that basis, the company missed analyst forecasts for a loss of $2.70 a share, according to First Call/Thomson Financial.

Leap shares fell 5/8 to 87-3/8 in Nasdaq trading. The stock is off its year-high of 102-3/8 but well above its year-low of 8-5/8.
