I have seen similar ideas proposed for Athlon & Apple. It is interesting that the references are not to x86 but almost always to AMD & the Athlon.

Like Sun, Apple currently enjoys the profits from its proprietary hardware but is falling behind in the MHz game due to Motorola/IBM. Mac OS X (and the underlying Darwin) should be readily portable to x86... Competition is good and a lot more interesting.
