OK, here is an idea and a possible starting place that hasn't been popular for a couple of decades. How about men behaving as a team member in the family.

There has been tremendous paradigm shifting resources put out to create androgyny in male and female behavior. This was followed by the logical question; Why do I need one of those...(husband/wife) to have children. Nope, if the mom and dad are synonymous then they simply represent an androgynous care giver; and one of each adds nothing particularly valuable to the situation. In fact why not just have a government agency that provides one. So the androgynous single mom, or single dad household has become more and more common. Once the ideal of androgynous parenting is achieved in an intact family it is the value of the male's contribution that is most often in question. This is what is being presented at the door of many men in this country. Many open the door and move on.

Clearly if males are to be contributing team members of a family the androgynous ideal lacks something. Over the past three decades the popular male role has been most effectively defined and manifest in our society by entities with a locus largely outside the male psyche.
