A--HP Powers New Internet Economy With Universal Information Exchange BUSINESS WIRE - March 31, 2000 17:37 PALO ALTO, Calif., Mar 31, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Support of OMG Group's Common Warehouse Metamodel Enables Information Sharing for Enterprises, Exchanges and B2B Portals Hewlett-Packard Company today unveiled its roadmap for unifying information exchange in the new Internet economy. HP's support of Object Management Group's (OMG) Common Warehouse Metamodel Interchange (CWMI) specification will help customers share information with customers and partners, creating customer intimacy and streamlining the supply chain. "HP is committed to ushering in the next chapter of the Internet. We know that information will fuel the explosion of business-to-business portals, online exchanges and trading communities," said Jennie Grimes, e-intelligence solutions manager at HP. "HP is leveraging its broad expertise in business intelligence to lay the best foundation for our customers in this new economy." The CWMI standard is a landmark submission that follows the creation of the Extensible Markup Language (XML) by the Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C), and XML Metadata Interchange (XMI) by the OMG. Marking the next step in the establishment of a metadata interchange among all data warehousing, business intelligence, knowledge management and portal technologies, the proposed CWMI provides a powerful object model with a set of application programming interfaces (APIs), interchange formats and services that span the spectrum of metadata relating to the extraction, transformation, transportation, loading, integration and analysis phases within data warehousing. CWMI resolves potential integration issues by enabling users to extend the model to meet their specific needs. HP support of CWMI will help customers with the following: -- Simplified Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) Processing -- With a common metadata model that captures the metrics around the ETL process, customers can use the code to better understand data lineage, and reuse the code to streamline modifications in the ETL process. -- Automated change data management -- Because CWMI keeps the documentation on the ETL process in a single source, change data management can be automated using sniffers and agents. -- More useful Online Analytical Processing -- By capturing data lineage in CWMI, end users can navigate information using business terms, understand the impact of data transformation on current values, and easily drill all the way back to source systems. -- Real-time data collection from the Internet -- With CWMI, information being collected in real time via the Internet can be quickly placed in a data store for analysis and alerts. This brings customer recommendation and response to near real time for the new Internet economy. -- Streamlined administration -- For warehouse administrators, who need access to all the necessary information to control and monitor the state of the data warehouse, quick access to source, update and derivation information will mean quicker recovery and better data integrity. -- Multivendor tool support -- Because most customers use a number of different tools and each tool has its own metadata, management across those tools can be a challenge. CWMI will become the warehouse for single-source metadata access. Simplifying the support of multiple tools will mean large dollar savings for HP customers. Additional information from OMG regarding the CWMI specification is available at omg.org , from the CWMI schedule page at omg.org or by sending an e-mail to infor@omg.org.
