Sony Expects 10 Mln PlayStation2 Shipments In FY2000

Thursday, March 30, 2000

TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Sony Corp. (6758) said Thursday it forecasts worldwide shipments of PlayStation2 game consoles will total 10 million units next fiscal year, starting in April.

In the Japanese market alone, it expects PlayStation2 shipments of 4 million units. For North America it expects shipments of 3 million units, and for Europe 3 million units.

PlayStation2 went on sale in Japan in March. It will be launched in the U.S. and Europe later this year.

At a press briefing Thursday, Sony also said it will set up a holding company - Sony Broadband Entertainment Inc. - in the U.S. to "enhance the value" of its music, motion picture, television and related entertainment businesses. The company will have as its core Sony Music Entertainment Inc. and Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.

Sony also said Thursday its group headquarters in Tokyo will be positioned as an "eHQ" to coordinate business for the Internet era "with the prospect of a possible transition to a holding company." For its headquarters management team, Sony will promote Kunitake Ando to executive deputy president and chief operating officer effective April 1. He is currently corporate senior executive vice president and president and chief operating officer of Sony Corp's personal IT network company.

Sony will also promote Teruhisa Tokunaka to executive deputy president, representative director and chief financial officer from April 1. He is currently senior managing director and chief financial officer of Sony Corp.

Sony said it might make an initial public offering for its unit Sony Communication Network Corp. in the future. That company, an Internet service provider, was set up under the name So-net.

x-box is dead at the starting gate.

Why would MSFT tout this thing so long before it is avail? What are they afraid of? or who? x-box is a "me-too" (potential) product.

MSFT is heading to a marketing disaster with x-box.
