(4 Feb 00) Open-source data management coming to IAs

Open-source data management coming to IAs
While the market awaits a deluge of Internet appliances (IAs), Centura Software and OpenAvenue announced at the LinuxWorld Conference in New York the launch of db.linux, the first open-source, embeddable database for IAs.

The announcement comes at a time when industry experts are predicting a skyrocketing growth in Linux-based appliances, with sales growing from $4 billion in 2000 to $16 billion in 2003 (GartnerGroup/Dataquest).

Although Linux platforms and GNU C tools have been readily available, Centura says there has been a glaring lack of a complementary data management solution. OpenAvenue will provide the db.linux host site.

The db.linux database will require 200KB of RAM (40KB if data access is read-only). It will be scalable and optimized for performance in a variety of applications, including telecom, network/system management, and real-time and embedded systems. db.linux should be available through the OpenAvenue host site by the end of the month. <<
