Many years ago, when I was just starting to invest, I bought a utility stock. I remember the very first dividend check that arrived in the mail. I ran in to show my parents. The check was for 19 cents. I was so proud. My parents could have laughed, but they didn't. Some of you may recall the couple of stories I've told about my parents. They didn't own stocks. Like most depression era people, they merely saved cash. Frankly, we didn't have much at all.

I remember telling them, "This may not seem like much, but just wait, it will get bigger." I can remember my Dad looking at me while I was staring at that check with my name on it made out for 19 cents and saying, "I'm proud of you, Son." Gosh, how I wish he were still here.

In any event, years went by, I stayed in the market. Some years were awful, some were good. I read everything about it I could get my hands on. Eventually, I figured I was the greatest. Hey, I had a math mind and 13 years of college. I knew it all. But, everytime I got the big head, with the big bucks, it seems like life would test me with a dose of reality. I then would lose, big time. Looking back, I made some stupid and sometimes greedy moves. I have tried to learn from those days. Still am learning, too.

Funny, I can recall feeling so sure of DELL back in the early years, that I actually went to my two boys' piggy banks and got their few hundred bucks of birthday and Christmas money to buy a few more shares of DELL before DELL made its run years ago. (That was a smart move of course)

Anyway, I know the market has tested us all lately. It has a dangerous side to it doesn't it, especially for those still learning and who have taken a big hit. Some on here maybe are feeling its big sting for the first time. Well, Troops, that is the price you pay for experience. Ya just gotta learn from it and go on. Ya gotta just climb back in and little by little come back. When you think about how bad things are, just look around at others you know in life, and I suspect you will realize you don't have it bad in comparison. So let's get back on that pony and wait for the bulls, because they're coming!

Hope everyone has a super weekend!

Rick

By the way, I still have that check for 19 cents. I never cashed it. That was 30 years ago. I wanted to keep it as a reminder. It is now with my Dad's special items that I keep in a very special place..........)
