"Many tribal societies have managed to transform inner physical dominance rivalry into aesthetic competition, where the elegance and originality of one's hair do, or facial makeup, or the rarity of the feathers in the headdress establish dominance."

Gosh we seem to be right back to the point where kids kill for the right sneakers, logo jackets and hubcaps. The truly physically dominant take what they want.

Boot camp didn't originate with the USMC. There is a modicum of "form" in even the most primitive warrior groups.

In my view, an original hair-do, make-up job or hat benefits NO one but the individual -- hardly a cornerstone of civilization.

Nihil, if a Zulu tribesman sticks a dozen ostrich feathers up his ass, does that make him a dominant warrior or a walking dust mop?

I wasn't characterizing primitive society at all, I was characterizing the common experience of males in this society when not under the watchful eye of adults........
