I believe, in logic, this kind of persuasion by invoking authority is labelled 'name-calling'? No. It's called an appeal to authority, and in this case it is appropriate and justified, because Modigliani is an expert in the field. Had I invoked Pikabo Street or Jane Fonda you would be justified in chastising me. In this case an appeal to Modigliani is logically consistent. Second, neither Merton nor Scholes went bankrupt; LTC did. And in any case, it is irrelevant. Finally, your analogy to the universe is specious.
