Neil--Here, here! I am writing this 100 times on the blackboard:

"I will not buy shiny pebbles. I will not buy shiny pebbles. I will not buy shiny pebbles. I will not..."

I believe that you are absolutely correct in trying to limit the scope of this board to its original intent...As a relatively new investor I have tried to concentrate my major holdings into what have been acknowledged here as gorillas and put lesser amounts into emerging gorillas. This last week has been nerve wracking for me and I'm sure other relatively new investors...

Scope:

Scope. The reason I suggested that we be careful here with regard to scope on this thread is that it seems to me that there is a middle ground between far ranging into what I at least regard as areas where no goriilla or king is likely because the relative growth prospects are limited or there is danger of destruction of value by what economists call (choke) exogenous factors. An example of an "exogenous" factor is the government taking action which can severely wound if not destroy entire areas with capricious or politically inspired action. That is why to me not only biotech but most medical areas are dangerous because they are vulnerable. Therefore I suggest we not devote bandwidth here discussing such areas or companies in such areas.

Perhaps a new thread such as Teflon's thread on e commerce and Godzillas would be a reasonable way to discuss biotech for those who wish to discuss biotech.

But on the flip side, telecom was not an area with which Geoff Moore was experienced nor familiar nor had studied in depth. The evidence of that is that to the best of my knowledge and belief (like Mike I have lent my original book to a friend) telecom was not included in the original book.

Other evidence of that is not only Geoff Moore's resistance to Qualcomm as a gorilla but the initial skepticism here re Qualcomm. IMO only Mike's careful, detailed, in depth analysis which was one of the best DD's I, for one, know of, made the acceptability of Qualcomm as a new gorilla possible on this thread. There was a strong preference then as there is now in favor of concentrating on the silverbacks and skepticism of "expanding" the scope of the thread. That expansion (for Qualcomm) and many others since such as GMST, has enriched the thread in content and those of us who paid attention with dollars.

I therefore suggest that we keep some degree of openness here. Not for abuse, but to learn. The example of CREE and ELON are instructive. Seems like the discussion of them has been helpful and allowed some of us to consider them seriously. That process is useful IMO.

Again there is a middle ground here where common sense and respect for the rights of others not to be swamped with off the wall stuff should be respected.

End of rant. (At least for now)

Best.
