Dear Charles: To the best of my recollection, one has to fly to the States via either Canada or Mexico. Unless things have changed since last spring, there are no direct flights between Cuba and the U.S.

Add to this that: a.) Elians father probably does not have a passport, needed to even get a visa to the States; b.) flying to the States then staying here (hotel, food, etc.) is EXPENSIVE for even middle class Cubans; and c.) the average person in any country does not normally have the luxery of being able leaving work for an undefined period of time.

WHEN (not if) Elian goes home, I hope his relatives here pay for a sea freight container to ship to Cuba all the stuff they have been buying for him while here. From all I can see via the media, that child is being bribed with material goods to want to stay in the U.S.A.

Regards,

Lynn

That's not even *it. There are all these little legal angles. They can't REALLY have a hearing about this unless the father's in the US. Since he's not in the US, they can't have a hearing! What the hell? The reality is that coming to the US earlier made things worse than better. Enough's enough. We helped Elian greive. We learned things about ourselves. It's time for Elian to go home. -JCJ
