Microsoft Disappointed by Mediation Collapse
SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) said on Saturday that it was ``disappointed' that a judge mediating its antitrust dispute with the Justice Department had ended his efforts.

``We're disappointed that the government would not agree to a fair and reasonable settlement,' Microsoft spokesman Jim Cullinan told Reuters

``It's clear that the states (which are also involved in the lawsuit) and the Department of Justice were stuck on excessive and extreme ideas that were just not going to lead to settlement,' said Cullinan.

The government had rejected Microsoft's proposals. Those have not been confirmed but sources said previously that they included changes that would have made it easier for competitors to write software for the Windows operating system and ending preferential pricing for favored customers.

The judge mediating the Microsoft antitrust case announced on Saturday that he had ended his efforts to settle the case because the differences between the two sides ``were too deep-seated to be bridged.'

``I regret to announce the end of my efforts to mediate the Microsoft antitrust case,' U.S. Court of Appeals Chief Judge Richard Posner said in a statement after nearly four months of mediation.
