China Telecom E-News, March 26-April 1, 2000 -------------------------------- Ericsson Wins Largest GSM Expansion Contract To Date In China (March 29) Ericsson and Guangdong Mobile Communications Co. Ltd. have signed a contract for the sixth expansion of GMCC's GSM network. Under the contract, Ericsson will provide GMCC with network infrastructure equipment, software and services valued at more than US$ 630 million. Upon completion of the expansion project early next year, the capacity of GMCC's dual band GSM 900/1800 network will exceed 18 million subscribers. This is the largest GSM expansion project in China to date. -------------------------------- Investor, Ericsson and Hutchison Whampoa Joining Forces to Form Venture Capital Company Focusing on the Mobile Internet Industry (March 27) - Investor, Sweden's largest holding company, Ericsson, and Hutchison Whampoa, a leading Hong Kong based multinational, announced the acquisition of a controlling interest in Guoco Land Limited (the Company) which will expand its business to include a venture capital operation to focus on the mobile Internet industry in Asia. The three partners will contribute a total of US$ 177 million to the Company. -------------------------------- Lucent Technologies signs US$145 million in contracts to supply optical systems, fiber cable to customers in China (March 27) Lucent Technologies signed contracts worth a combined US$145 million to supply optical networking systems and fiber cable to two customers in China. In an agreement worth more than US$80 million with CITIC Pacific Limited, Lucent will provide optical networking equipment for CITIC's nationwide backbone network project. The three-line backbone network will be 32,000 kilometers (about 20,000 miles) long and will connect millions of customers throughout China. It is scheduled to be operational in the third quarter of this year. -------------------------------- Lucent Technologies Builds Multiservice Broadband Network for China's Yunnan Telecom (March 30) Lucent Technologies announced that it will supply multiservice core switches for Yunnan Telecom's multiservice broadband network backbone. The multi-million dollar contract further demonstrates Lucent's leadership position in providing next generation converged network solutions delivering voice, data and video services in China and worldwide. Yunnan's new network, expected to become operational in April, will launch new services for enterprises and individual consumers including E-commerce applications, commercial IP services, integrated network wholesale business, individual consumer IP services, Virtual Private Network (VPN), IP telephony voice over IP (VoIP), frame relay and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) services. -------------------------------- Conference: China Telecom Returns to Washington DC in Full Force Now in its fifth year, China Telecom, the premiere event on the Chinese telecommunications market, returns to Washington, DC at the Wyndham Hotel on May 16-17 for China Telecom 2000 - China at the Crossroads.
