Thread, This is posted on AOL today, apparently a friend or acquaintance of Mr. Malmed...

As some of you may have been aware, Leon Malmed is retiring from SNDK. He and the other people in his marketing and sales department are a very big reason that SNDK is where it is today. I sent him an e-mail thanking him for the fine job he has done over the years. He sent me the response that follows. I asked him if I could post his response and he gave me permission to do so. I just felt that other people might appreciate some of the things that he had to say.

------------------------------------------------------------
Hello Bob,

Thank you for your kind words and recognition. The last 8 years have been fun. I have been lucky to work with a superb team of smart, loyal and dedicated people. I feel very strong that it is only the beginning. I remain a substantial stockholder.

It is not easy to leave such a good situation but after so many years, I need to pay back my wife, myself and society. Nelson Chan whom I have been working with for over five years is a very capable individual. Together, we have built the Marketing and Sales department that is the best I have seen in my lifetime.

Again thank you. Flash Technology is in its infancy when it comes to costs and markets. The companies with the Technology (very few) will take it all.

Leon Malmed

Sam and Thread, This is the e-mail I sent to Wired Magazine...

Subj: The November Issue's Sony Piece
Date: 11/10/99
To: editor@wired.com
CC: davidsheff@yahoo.com, rants@wired.com

Dear Editor:

I read the Sony piece in your latest issue of Wired with great interest. Despite the fact that the title page photo has the Sony CEO holding up a "Memory Stick" on the tip of his finger there is precious little information in the body of the article that expounds on the potential of removable flash memory. I also took exception to the fact that the Memory Stick was referred to as a "Sony creation," because the technology packed into that little piece of plastic actually stems from core research in flash technology by several other companies. Moreover, I do not believe flash memory architecture is a competency the CSL at Sony has even dabbled in, let alone mastered.

I expressed my concerns about the fact that SanDisk, a key innovator in the flash memory arena, has had very little exposure in the technology press in a rant at this URL...

On our SanDisk Thread at SI (Silicon Investor) we have grown accustomed to being overlooked. In fact, a rather high profile piece in the NY Times "Circuits" section all but left out any mention of CompactFlash and MMC, the fastest growing and arguably most promising form factors in removable flash memory.

If you have any interest in getting to know flash memory better you can start at this link. The information contained here assumes you have a basic knowledge of Geoffrey Moore's book entitled "The Gorilla Game". The discussion is constructed to draw parallels with several chapters in his book and highlights non-volatile memory applications in the digital photography market.

I hope you have the time to send one of your writers on a bit of a fishing expedition. You may actually set your hook into a keeper.
