Rarebird, <<I don't see a good fundamental reason why Gold should rise at the present time.>> Neither do I, and that's why it will. <VBG>

"A severe correction will only take place if the US economy goes into recession"

On the contrary, corrections often take place before the onset of a recession. Everything looks good yet the market tanks. Also the market rises before a recession ends.

The stock market normally is ahead of official 'recession & expansion' numbers. I disagree with your assertion.

<By raising rates, Greenspan is helping to keep the dollar strong and foreigners invested. >

This depends apon what other interest rates are doing since it's 'relative' rates that are important. I also agree with your use of 'Greenspan is helping'... because rates are only one of the many variables determining exchange rates... and usually a shorter term one at that.

That said, to those looking for the secular move [dollars flooding back to the U.S. and the bailing out of the U.S. $ as a reserve currency [may have little, IMO, to do with i rates, relative or otherwise] I pose the question, why? What will the catalyst be?? Someone should call Jim Grant and ask him!
