FatSam, the article about Internet Appliances focused mostly on the "networked home". Elon management has been very clear that they see the development of mass markets here to be a few years out, so this would be consistent with the gist of the article. While the trend towards Home Automation and Internet Appliances (as in white goods, not cell phones) has already started, ELON does not currently rely on this segment for it's revenues which come primarily from Industrial Automation implementations at this point. Imo ELON will be perfectly situated to benefit when these "home" applications ramp up. Control Networks, not data networks, are ELON's game. All the networks mentioned by the author...Universal Plug and Play (UPnP, from Microsoft), Jini (Sun Microsystems), and HAVI (Sony, Philips, Hitachi, and others), are data networks and as the writer mentions The three are, of course, largely incompatible. This is precisely why Elon is taking an active role in ensuring that all these technologies remain compatible with Elons control network protocol. Echelon is complementary technology to these data networks and they are focused on ensuring interoperability, on the control network level, between products from different vendors, this is the key underpinning of their technology. For elon's work regarding these stds see this link. echelon.com as per the article....The devices on the network must agree on how to communicate, and so far we don't have that agreement. This problem is being addressed by OSGi (Open Services Gateway Initiative). Echelon serves on OSGi's Board of Directors and as OSGi's Vice President of Asia Pacific. Granted mass markets for "home" internet appliances are a ways off, but the authors contention that..... The reality, of course, is that they primarily exist in the imaginations of the entrepreneurs. is debatable at best and outright ignorant at worst....Sears plans to offer internet appliances for the kitchen sometime next yr, meaning these are further than the "imagination" stage of development, and in Europe a full line of domestic "Internet Appliances" is already available.
