Re: ADC and HDSL2- Adtran and PairGain

Thread- Two important announcements regarding HDSL2(a literal doubling over HDSL). You don't hear about it much today, but look what plain old HDSL has done for Adtran. HDSL2 has more promise. -MikeM(From Florida)

ADTRAN Announces Interoperability with ADC HDSL2 Systems

Leading System Vendors Team Up to Ensure Interoperability

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Apr 4, 2000- ADTRAN, Inc, a market leader in DSL deployment equipment and ADC Communications, a leading global supplier of network equipment, software, and integration services, announced today that they have demonstrated interoperability of their independently developed HDSL2 system solutions. Both companies contributed to the development of the ANSI T1.418-2000 HDSL2 standard, and continue to promote interoperability through their participation in multivendor interoperability testing.

"ADTRAN is firmly committed to the HDSL2 standard and is aggressively pursuing interoperability with leading equipment manufacturers like ADC," said Tom Stanton, VP and General Manager of ADTRAN's Carrier Networks Division. "Interoperability among vendors encourages healthy competition resulting in higher quality products, lower prices, and better service."

"ADC and ADTRAN are among the first to demonstrate that products adhering carefully to the HDSL2 standard will be fully interoperable. This is good news for service providers and the vendors who support them," said Sean Martin, VP of Marketing and Product Management for ADC.

Both ADTRAN and ADC will continue industry-wide interoperability testing, both independently and through the industry-sponsored HDSL2 Consortium at the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory.

ADC and PairGain Announce Phase Two HDSL2 Interoperability

MINNEAPOLIS and TUSTIN, Calif., Apr 4, 2000-- ADC Communications and PairGain Technologies today announced that they have demonstrated the next phase of HDSL2 interoperability testing between their respective Soneplex and HiGain(R) Solitaire systems. The interoperability tests were successfully performed at the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Lab this week. This latest phase of interoperability testing is based on the approved ANSI standard for HDSL2. ADC and PairGain previously announced first phase interoperability of their HDSL2 systems in January of 1999.

"Satisfying service providers that are embracing HDSL2 systems requires demonstrated interoperability among leading vendors," said Dennis Young, vice president, GM Telco Access at PairGain. "ADC and PairGain are leaders in the HDSL and HDSL2 market space, and these successful interoperability tests demonstrate our confidence that both systems will perform admirably in carrier networks."

"ADC believes that carriers will widely accept standard-compliant HDSL2, therefore it is especially important that we have achieved this milestone," said Sean Martin, vice president of marketing for ADC's Wireline Systems Division. "Interoperability of the Soneplex system and HiGain Solitaire system with a broad array of platforms is important going forward."

Both PairGain and ADC are members of the HDSL2 consortium at the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Lab. The consortium's purpose is to foster interoperability among HDSL2 vendors. Both PairGain and ADC have designed their HDSL2 systems in compliance with the T1E1.4 Draft American National Standard for Telecommunications.

On February 23, 2000, PairGain and ADC announced that they had reached agreement for the purchase of PairGain by ADC. The proposed acquisition is estimated to close in ADC's third fiscal quarter, which ends July 31, 2000. Closing of the proposed transaction is subject to the approval of PairGain's stockholders, receipt of required regulatory approvals and other customary conditions.
