sb - here's an interesting article from the INTC thread about Intel teaming up with CPQ to host server farms. I thought DELL had that business locked up.

Mar. 24, 2000 (Computer Reseller News - CMP via COMTEX) -- Boston -- As the
industry rallies around e-business, some distributors are wrapping their logistics
arms around the hosting market to keep pace.

Distributors such as Wyle Systems, KeyLink Systems, Hall- Mark Global Solutions
and Tech Data Corp. are aggressively targeting hosting providers, ASPs and ISPs.

Wyle, a member of VEBA Electronics Inc., is working with Compaq Computer
Corp. and Intel Corp. to pretest, pre-configure and preintegrate servers for hosting
companies as they need them, said Bill Slezak, director of e-business for the Irvine,
Calif.-based distributor. "These are pre-configured bundles so that when XYZ.com
has an increase in traffic, we have the ability to help our customers get increased
horsepower within hours," he said.

The servers, which include Intel-based systems from Compaq, as well as white-box
systems powered by Intel, can typically be delivered to the hosting customer within
24 to 36 hours, Slezak said.

Wyle also offers co-location on-site at its larger hosting customers. The distributor
would not name any of its hosting customers because it has signed non-disclosure
agreements with them but said it has a few dozen signed up.

Wyle's Rapid Deployment Program is part of an ongoing effort to dedicate specific
resources to the recruitment and support of hosting companies. Last August, the
distributor launched an e-business unit with a dedicated inside sales team and
customer service representatives, giving each service provider that signs up with
Wyle a dedicated salesperson, Slezak said.

Other distributors also have started targeting hosting companies and are offering
similar programs.

KeyLink, the computer systems division of Pioneer-Standard Electronics Inc.,
provides rapid systems deployment through its Systems Integration Value Added
Center, said Matt Reaves, director of software and solutions marketing for KeyLink,
Cleveland.

"We have [the systems] sitting in a rack that allows us to quickly pull them off, reload
them and then quickly download software that [the customers] want," Reaves said.

KeyLink also is building a marketing organization to focus specifically on the
ASP/ISP space. The first phase of the organization should be operational by April
1, said Bill Macchione, senior corporate marketing manager of the ISP/ASP
Program at KeyLink.

Tech Data and Hall-Mark also are moving into this area. "We've created dedicated
sales and marketing groups to attack these [ASP and hosting] channels. Also,
we're collaborating with vendors to identify and serve emerging customer
segments," said Steve Raymund, chairman and chief executive of Tech Data,
Clearwater, Fla.

For its part, Hall-Mark already has developed relationships with companies such as
Vignette Corp., BroadVision Inc., Ariba Inc. and Cable & Wireless plc, among
others, said Rick Hamada, president of Hall-Mark.
