Sitera Introduces First Network Processor To Implement Rambus Technology For Optimized Performance

BUSINESS WIRE - April 03, 2000 08:04

SAN JOSE, Calif., Apr 3, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Sitera Incorporated today introduced the PRISM network processor, the first network processor available that incorporates high-bandwidth chip connection technology from Rambus Inc. (Nasdaq:RMBS). Through the Rambus(R) interface technology, the Sitera network processor is able to support a 12.8 gigabits per second data path to Rambus DRAM (RDRAM(R)) devices. As a result, the PRISM processor is able to provide wire-speed packet processing while enabling advanced network services, which require extensive table look-ups.

"Packet processing is one of the most demanding memory-intensive applications, particularly with today's requirements for enhanced services," said Kevin Donnelly, vice president and general manager, Consumer and Communications Products at Rambus Inc. "By designing the PRISM processor to utilize high-speed RDRAM, Sitera is automatically giving their customers a big leap in performance."

"Sitera developed our chip with Rambus memory technology because it was the fastest yet most economical solution available to provide sophisticated services, such as VPN, IPSec, MPLS, Diff-Serv, and Policy Management, required in next-generation networking equipment," stated Steve Flannery, President and CEO of Sitera. "We could have picked SRAM technology, but it costs over 15 times more per bit and requires much higher pin counts for equivalent bandwidth. Other DRAM technologies require more pins, devices, memory size and cost to approach the bandwidth of RDRAM.

Each Sitera PRISM processor can use multiple RDRAMs or RIMM(TM) modules providing up to half a gigabyte of storage for large, sparse tables; packet payloads; statistics and more.
