agreed, Lone Star. Thought I'd give the guy some rope so that he could hang himself. It's a shame he never took the bait.

For the record and for those who haven't seen this

Does Jini? technology compete with the LonWorks platform?
No.
Jini is a layer on top of the Java platform to allow the creation of a federation of devices on a network. Through Jini, you can simply plug devices such as printer, cameras, and disk drives into an existing network and have them announce their services for use by Jini devices already on the network, as well as use services offered by other Jini devices. LONWORKS networks complement Jini by allowing it to tap into the world of control. The LONWORKS Jini proxy, based on Echelon's LNS network operating system, leverages the automatic discovery and self-documentation features of LONWORKS devices to detect and register each device's functionality as Jini services. No additional hardware or software in the devices themselves or any device-specific drivers in the proxy is required. The end result is delivery of the Jini vision of simple, "plug and work" networking for consumer and other control devices.

Does UPnP compete with LonWorks technology?
No.
UPnP is the extension of the original PC plug and play concept. It's goal is to connect, through the use of IP and Internet standards, other devices such as printers, fax machines, cameras, etc. LonWorks networks complement UPnP by allowing it to tap into the world of control - something that is very difficult, if not impossible, for UPnP to do.
