iMagicTV and Sun Microsystems Join Forces to Deliver Broadband TV

PR NEWSWIRE - April 03, 2000 10:00

SAINT JOHN, NB, Apr 3, 2000 /CNW-PRN via COMTEX/ -- iMagicTV, a leading provider of interactive digital television software for service providers worldwide, today announced it has signed a comprehensive marketing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sun Microsystems Inc.

Under the terms of the MOU, iMagicTV and Sun Microsystems will engage in joint marketing, promotion, sales and product development to further the digital TV over broadband marketplace.

"Sun provides the robust, scalable platforms and open, standards-based software that are key to operating our end-to-end digital television software. Sun is an ideal strategic partner as they are committed to delivering innovative IP-based solutions to service providers, and they are committed to developing leading interactive video solutions," said Marcel LeBrun, president and CEO of iMagicTV. "Our MOU with Sun will enable Sun and iMagicTV to go to market with a hardware and software solution that is designed to work seamlessly together and integrates well in multi-vendor network environments. That means service providers can deploy television services quickly and cost-effectively ultimately improving both their business case and the consumer experience."

Sun Microsystems delivers server platforms for use by service providers to host and offer sophisticated Internet and IP-based services, and has developed software and JAVA development resources and tools.

"The iMagicTV software running on the Sun platform provides a powerful, scalable solution for service providers around the world looking for profitable and efficient ways to deploy IP-based services, including interactive digital TV, to consumers," said Bruce Baikie, Strategic Alliance Manager, Network Service Provider Division at Sun Microsystems. "Together we are aiming to provide service providers with a leading-edge front- to back-end digital TV solution, saving them both time and money."

As a result of the MOU, Sun Microsystems and iMagicTV plan to join forces in key aspects of delivering interactive digital television solutions to service providers from product development to marketing and sales. Customers will be able to view demonstrations of the end-to-end solution at both iMagicTV and Sun corporate sites and will benefit from both Sun and iMagicTV global sales and customer service organizations to support the development of their interactive television solutions.

The MOU will also serve as a launch pad for both companies to initiate a strategic business alliance, subject to further negotiation and the closing of a definitive agreement.

iMagicTV is committed to bringing innovative interactive television solutions to service providers in cost-effective ways, by taking advantage of existing copper infrastructure and by inter-working with leading vendors in the areas of server, video networking, network transport and access technologies. By developing business relationships with industry leaders like Sun, iMagicTV continues to strengthen its position as a leader in open, standards-based television solutions for service providers.
