marginmike: There is a fascinating combination of DoCoMo FUD and national pride and (probably) some substance to all this. And DDI seems to be in a position of wanting to be "on board" in case any of the DoCoMo stuff has a major market.

IMO DDI may wish to play both sides of the street so to speak.

Keep upgrading its current frequencies and channels through various IS 95 versions, add 1XRTT asap as the first "phase" of CDMA2000 and then soon thereafter HDR.

DDI may also wish to bid on "new" frequencies to be "assigned" to 3rd gen, and will play the game necessary to do so. And national pride may enter into this again as well. Plus a bargaining chip re Qualcomm.

I see a "two track" approach by DDI.

But further knowledge of whether the "new" spectrum offers some advantage to WCDMA would be useful. Eventually we will know I suppose.

Actually we may have a three track system going in Japan. Not clear.

1. Current frequencies and IS 95 thu CDMA 2000.

2. A new "bastard" (i.e. nonstandard) WCDMA on a new frequency or frequencies.

3. The "real" set of 3rd gen technologies (whatever they may evolve to) on a even "newer" set of frequencies.

Very difficult to tell what is going on right now, let alone predict much into the future in Japan.

Suggest we watch and see.

But also expect the Q to remain a major player, especially given its data advantage.

Best.
