Not only is the limitation of children a practical necessity to further social equality, but physical prowess and brute strength must cease to be the dominant criteria in the social hierarchy. While it is true that among the upper classes, it was possible for women to flourish in political or cultural roles, for the mass of women, the situation was pretty much unchanged throughout the millennia.The rise of industry accomplished three things: it made domestic tasks a good deal less time consuming, so that even people without servants could eliminate a good deal of drudgery from their lives; it made physical strength less salient, by substituting machines for men; and it made intelligence and learned skills much more salient as criteria for status. I would contend that without the rise of technology, the place of women might be agitated, but would not substantially improve, with the possible exception among the most affluent.......
