RESEARCH ALERT - Online brokers' estimates raised

NEW YORK, April 3 (Reuters) - Chase Manhattan's investment banking unit, Hambrecht & Quist, on Monday said it raised its profit estimates for online
brokerages, citing strong share trading volumes.

-- Analyst Gregory Smith raised his first-quarter profit estimate for Charles Schwab Corp. (NYSE: SCH) to 27 cents a share, from 23 cents a share.
Maintains buy rating.

-- Schwab itself on Monday said it expected to earn 31-33 cents a share for the first quarter.
-- Smith raised his estimate for E*Trade Group Inc. (NASDAQ: EGRP) to a loss of 16 cents a share, up from a loss of 18 cents. Reiterates buy rating.

-- Smith raised his price target on Knight/Trimark Group Inc. (NASDAQ: NITE) to $70, from $60, and raised his first-quarter estimate for the market maker
to 93 cents a share, from 67 cents. Reiterates buy rating.

-- Smith raised his first-quarter profit estimate for DLJdirect Inc. (NYSE: DIR) to a profit of 4 cents a share, from a loss of 1 cent a share. Maintains buy
rating.
