Gary B. Smith did post an article titled "April Fools!" that evening, at 18:17 (link below). He included what he really did prior to Thursday, which was pulling out of most of all of his long positions, by Wednesday 10:00. He didn't like the way the market looked.

Gary has written some excellent and informative articles about trading on the long and short side, and anyone who reads him regularly knew he was kidding--he would never have let himself get into an over-margined position, and he would not ride his stocks down into deep losses.

Whether the prank was in bad taste or not is subject to opinion. I found it amusing, and I have lost lots of money in the past being fully margined, and then having my stocks hit hard. I learned from the mistake, and took no offense from his joke. It just reinforced the lesson.
