The inability of native Americans to federate and think racially when they were oppressed by foreigners is a tragedy. It is, of course, similar to many peoples everywhere. Selfishness, narrowmindedness, internecine warfare made it possible for the Europeans to destroy the civilizations and the tribes. It is a mistake to romanticize people who could not submerge their differences in order to unite and help themselves to survive. Survival required national unity, just as the French needed to build a nation to resist the Northmen, and the Germans to resist the Huns and the Mongols. The inability of the Alaskan peoples to expel the Russians and the Hawaiians the English and Americans meant that their independence would necessarily be crushed. The failure to build a nation of the different tribes meant Indians were doomed to extinction.
