Why do you have to define it? Any more than defining the female role?

You can say, statistically what a given percentage of males do at a given time- so you can define what maleness might be for the instant that the survey is valid, but it's just a snapshot of a fluid entity.

I suppose that if the male role is somewhat flexible, it is better to talk of masculinity. But I still think that you ought to put something out here if you find the discussion unsatisfactory......
