You've got it wrong - sell calls when sentiment on the stock is bullish but you think it will range trade or fall - premiums are good and you get to keep them... if you think the stock will range trade up or rise, sell puts. If you think the stock will tank, put your money where your mouth is and buy puts, you could have made millions buying puts a few weeks ago...

I bought puts as a hedge against my DELL position in January when I thought they would warn - they did, and I made some money on the puts, but not much because it only dropped 8 points and only stayed down for a few days. If it had gone down further, I would have been able to put the stock at where it was before the fall... that would be the sensible hedge, not selling calls...

BTW I am selling puts and buying calls, so I must be nuts.
