It is indeed sad that the big and powerful can drive the smaller out of business. But the big only can stay big if they truly remain better, unless they entirely shut down the marketplace. Microsoft didn't succeed at doing that. It did not gain full control.

As for Netscape, right now Internet Explorer is a far superior product -- full of programming interfaces and functionality that do tons of work for you, with great XML integration, etc. Netscape was stupid -- they needed to team up with someone big and powerful who could throw as many dollars toward their browser R&D as Microsoft could afford to spend on theirs.

Netscape got cocky: "Our browser is universally acknowledged as the best. We have an 80% market share!" Well, tons of dollars and years later, Netscape does not have the best browser and its R&D efforts drag on endlessly, making it fall farther and farther behind.

I have no love for MSFT and Bill Gates -- but to me Netscape is a whining crybaby that made it into the spotlight and decided it deserved to be there whether or not they continued to innovate.
