The Rambus interface technology enables the new Prism processor to support a 12.8-gigabits-per-second data path to Rambus DRAM devices. As a result, the Prism processor can provide wire-speed packet processing while enabling advanced network services, which require extensive table look-ups, according to Sitera.

"Packet processing is one of the most demanding memory-intensive applications, particularly with today's requirements for enhanced services," said Kevin Donnelly, vice president and general manager of cnsumer and communications products at Rambus, in Mountain View, Calif.

The Sitera PRISM processors can use multiple RDRAMs or RIMMs providing up to half a gigabyte of storage for large, sparse tables; packet payloads; and statistics
