There was an article in Forbes last year about the "other" investments Gates has - the article was focused on a young guy who manages that, but it is not the charitable foundation, and it is a lot bigger - it had more than $30B last year, and one assumes 1999 was good to a savvy tech investor.

With that kind of a stash - $30B ranks up there with some serious funds, and it's all owned by ONE GUY, and could be $60B by now. It was obvious to me that Gates does not need to worry much about paying the rent out of his MSFT position - and he probably now mostly is focused on how to get that money into the charitable fund with minimum consequences... at least from an investment standpoint.
