Cisco and Nokia in mobiles pact.....

By Alan Cane in London - 3 Apr 2000 20:52GMT
From the Financial Times

Cisco Systems, the world leader in data networking, and Nokia Networks, the infrastructure arm of the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer, have agreed a marketing alliance designed to accelerate the development of mobile business.

The two companies plan to sell systems to mobile phone operators seeking to add internet capabilities to their services and to fixed wire operators who want to move into mobile networking.

The alliance, which is non-exclusive, is already working with BT Cellnet, which is rapidly expanding its mobile internet activities based on wap (wireless application protocol) technologies. Wap technology translates web pages into a form in which they can be viewed on a mobile phone screen.

Through the agreement, the two companies will seek to make Nokia's range of mobile technologies - GPRS, Edge, TDMA, WCDMA and UMTS - compatible with Cisco's internet backbone systems. The companies said: "This will give operators the opportunity to have comprehensive wireless systems solutions."

Nokia will use Cisco's backbone routing, local area network switching and enterprise products to build wireless internet networking systems for their customers. Cisco will also train Nokia's engineers on Cisco's products and technologies.

This collaboration between the industry leaders in mobile telephony and the internet suggests that predictions that mobile commerce is set for explosive growth are not overstated.

The introduction of GPRS - general packet radio service - this year will speed up the transmission of data from the internet to mobile phones, making it possible to retrieve information.

Re.CSCO will trade downward for the next month or two in a range that should have its floor in the low 60s.

I wouldn't count on that.

CSCO may make it there this week. May have to revise downward.

So you are saying basically that CSCO is "dead money" for the remainder of the year? Yogi
