Tuesday April 4, 4:48 am Eastern Time JDS Uniphase to buy Cronos for $750 mln in stock NEW YORK, April 4 (Reuters) - Canada's JDS Uniphase Corp, (NasdaqNM:JDSU <http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=jdsu&d=t> - news </n/j/jdsu.html>) (Toronto:JDU.TO <http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=jdu.to&d=t> - news </n/ca/j/jdu.html>), the world's largest supplier of parts for fibre optic equipment, said on Tuesday it signed a deal to buy closely held Cronos Integrated Microsystems Inc. for $750 million in stock. Cronos, based in Research Triangle Park, N.C., develops MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) devices, which are used in building high-capacity optical communication switches. JDS Uniphase, which announced earlier this year it planned to acquire rival E-Tek Dynamics Inc. (NasdaqNM:ETEK <http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=etek&d=t> - news </n/e/etek.html>) for about $15 billion in stock, said it expects to close the Cronos deal this month. Cronos shareholders must approve the deal but JDS Uniphase said in a statement stockholders representing a majority of outstanding Cronos voting stock have agreed to vote their shares in favour of the deal. No regulatory reviews are required for the transaction, the company said. ``All optical switching is clearly one of the next great hurdles for the fibre optic industry,' said Kevin Kalkhoven, Co-chairman and CEO of JDS Uniphase. ``We believe the addition of Cronos to the JDS Uniphase family is an important step in giving us the technology to help our customers create systems that will enable the continued evolution of the optical network.' JDS Uniphase's shares closed down 8-15/16 at 111-5/8 on Monday on the Nasdaq stock market.
