Lernout & Hauspie Showcases New Internet-Based Solution for Healthcare
Demonstrates Products At HIMSS
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 10, 2000--

L&H Showcases its First Large Vocabulary, Telephony-Based Speech

Recognition Technology for the Healthcare Market; New Solution Supports Medical Dictation and Transcription Platform, Provides Highly

Flexible, Modular Approach

Lernout & Hauspie (NASDAQ: LHSP; EASDAQ: LHSP) (L&H(TM)) demonstrated today for the first time a healthcare clinical documentation system that integrates large vocabulary speech recognition over the telephone, advanced digital dictation, natural language technology and transcription capabilities, all conveniently delivered via the Internet using an application service provider (ASP) model. The L&H(TM) Internet Charting Service is expected to be an outsourced solution for a wide variety of healthcare organizations, comprised of multiple service offerings that can save billions of dollars annually in excess costs associated with the creation, and management of patient information. The product is currently under development and is expected to be available in Q3 of this year. The offering is also expected to include a speech recognition disfluency filter, L&H's Nothing But Speech(TM) (NBS(TM)), which helps to eliminate the ``ahh' and ``umm' sounds that frequently cause errors among speech recognition users. L&H showcased this new offering along with its other solutions for the healthcare industry at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Annual Conference and Exposition here in Dallas, TX, through April 13, 2000.

L&H is rapidly becoming a leader in providing speech recognition, dictation and transcription solutions for the healthcare market, as evidenced by its impressive customer roster that includes over 700 hospitals such as, Duke University Medical Center, Emory University Hospital, New York Presbyterian Hospital, Yale New-Haven Hospital, Temple University Hospital and others, and by its wide range of proven speech solutions for healthcare, many of which are on display at the show here. As was announced previously, the company plans to leverage this leadership by creating a separate legal entity dedicated to healthcare and that it will consider forming a unit within the entity focused on Web-based healthcare market services. In addition, L&H plans to integrate its natural language processing with coding technologies from its partners to create solutions for automated medical coding and records processing.

``Our goal is to deliver the simplicity and flexibility of speech recogntion to a wide range of users across a wide variety of devices, to industries as diverse as telecommunications, legal and healthcare,' said Gaston Bastiaens, president and CEO of L&H. ``The availability of large vocabulary speech recognition over the phone represents a technology breakthrough for L&H and provides increased ease of use and convenience to our users by letting them employ any telephone, anytime as a dictation input device.'

``The healthcare industry today is facing tremendous pressures to contain costs while simultaneously providing better and more extensive records,' said Robert Schwager, Sr. vice president and general manager Integrated Healthcare Systems for Dictaphone. ``L&H's plans for a healthcare dictation and transcription solution will improve documentation processes which, in turn, will enhance third party reimbursement practices, and help decrease up-front equipment, management and staff costs. As L&H and Dictaphone merge their resources we will work toward expanding these capabilities to include Dictaphone's coding, data mining and records processing solutions.'

L&H last month signed a definitive agreement to acquire Dictaphone. The acquisition will leverage Dictaphone's installed base of more than 3000 hospital dictation and transcription software systems with L&H's industry leading speech recognition technology and applications to bring substantial efficiencies to the medical transcription market, which is anticipated to be over $6 billion.

L&H(TM) Internet Charting Service Offers Flexibility for Transcription

L&H Internet Charting Service is designed to be one of the most flexible and comprehensive solutions in the U.S. medical transcription market. The service is expected to provide a dictation and transcription solution that will help healthcare organizations of all sizes meet the increasing demands for more extensive and complete clinical documenting while preserving the familiarity of traditional transcription services. L&H Internet Charting Service will let physicians dictate in the manner to which they are accustomed, into a number of devices including a telephone, handheld digital recorder or PC-based application. Dictation will then be captured and routed to the L&H Internet Charting Service and be transcribed into text by a combination of advanced software and/or professional medical transcriptionists. The service is expected to feature L&H's breakthrough NBS technology that helps to eliminate the ``ahh' and ``umm' sounds that frequently cause errors among speech recognition users, helping to significantly improve automated transcription accuracy.

The service is expected to be customizable to the needs of any sized organization; allowing users to select the cost- and service-level best suited to their individual needs. All of the core service levels should allow customers to utilize the advanced speech recognition technology to transcribe physician dictation into text. They could then choose to have draft reports distributed and edited by L&H's network of professional medical editors or have them returned for editing to their in-house transcription staff or to the originating physicians. These options could be deployed in various combinations, across multiple departments and will offer support for a wide range of interfaces, allowing final reports to be uploaded directly to the hospital information systems.

Other L&H Healthcare Offerings Demonstrated

While at HIMSS, L&H also showcased L&H Voice Xpress(TM) Medical Solutions, L&H's recently announced PC based offering for individual physicians and other healthcare professionals that combines version 4 of L&H Voice Xpress(TM) continuous speech dictation software with L&H(TM) SpeechLinks and L&H(TM) SpeechDocs Filler. It lets users employ speech recognition to create medical evaluations, initial assessments, consults, progress notes, discharge summaries, testing reports, history & physicals, and referral letters. L&H SpeechDocs Filler adds speech and natural language query support for creating, accessing, and distributing documents, information, and knowledge for tasks such as document and forms fill-in and information browsing. L&H SpeechLinks allows both novice and advanced computer users to quickly create powerful voice macros and customize applications with speech to command-and-control the computer, automate tasks, and integrate desktop applications.

The Specialty Suite edition of L&H Voice Xpress Medical Solutions contains all 13 separate specialty versions in one package. Healthcare professionals who purchase the Specialty Suite can choose from the following: Internal Medicine, Primary Care, Radiology, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Neurology, Oncology, Pathology, Pediatrics, Mental Health, Orthopedics, Neonatology and Cardiology.

The company also demonstrated L&H(TM) PowerScribe© and L&H(TM) Clinical Reporter(TM), its leading departmental solutions. PowerScribe is the company's solution that enables physicians to dictate radiology reports with completely natural, freeform speech, as if using a traditional dictation system. L&H PowerScribe is the only network-based speech recognition system designed from the outset to fully support traditional transcription as well as speech recognition, allowing it to easily integrate into a customer's existing dictation and transcription workflow.

L&H Clinical Reporter is an interactive, networked reporting solution that lets doctors instantly access patient records and create complete, HCFA-compliant reports using continuous speech and natural language voice commands. The L&H Clinical Reporter solution, available in emergency medicine and pathology editions, incorporates medical knowledge bases that prompt the user through report templates.
