It's not impossible that the margin calls in the Nasdaq are forcing some investors to sell their quality stuff. That could be why the rest of the market is starting to cave!

I don't believe this is the main event though. There's still a couple of weeks of tax funding so at least some money must be coming in.

You know, margin calls are calculated on the lowest point hit during the day--at least a good many years ago when I had the misfortune to be hit with one, that's how it worked, and the wording was "subsequent market action will not invalidate this call," or something like that. Today's decline ought to reduce equity in numerous accounts to below the theshold for a call--not to speak of individual higher limits. If I were managing a brokerage house I would be making a lot of preemptive sales.
