I think you're discounting the power of both the written and spoken word. Quite a few people believe everything they read in the papers or see on TV. Especially when you have a station such as CNBC where people expect to hear "expert advice." One of the Raging Bull postings from that "daily nightly newsletter" claimed that after Abby was on, CNBC rolled out 6 bear side analysts and no bull side to counter it. Then on Friday morning, they topped it off by having on Gail Dudak, who was thrown off the Rukeyser show as being the most consistently wrong elf for being so bearish the last few years. In that context, I'm not sure you can say CNBC was totally responsible in their reporting.
