Corzine Wins New Jersey Senate Primary
UPI
Wednesday June 7, 2000
A political novice with a large personal fortune handed former New Jersey Gov. Jim Florio a resouding defeat in the race for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat of Frank Lautenberg.
Jon Corzine, a former co-chairman of Goldman Sachs, late Tuesday ran 18 percent ahead of Florio after spending more than $30 million on the primary. Much of the money went on a blitz of television advertising attacking the unpopular tax increase that helped make Florio a one-term governor.
